Greeley Forest Garden

Greeley Forest Garden is located between North Greeley and North Interstate Avenue near the east end of the Fremont Bridge. Currently 2 parcels, totalling about 0.6 acres, donated to OSALT by Multnomah County in December of 2005. We hope to acquire additional adjacent parcels to increase the total garden to about 10 acres.

We are in the very beginning of developing the site into a forest garden, a "food forest", planted with perennial food bearing plants such as fruit and nut trees, grape and kiwi vines, and blueberry bushes. The details of the plan, including areas for wildlife, walking trails, community growing spaces, etc. will be worked out in a series of meetings with neighborhood residents, assisted by experienced designers and growers.

The first workday took place in September, with over 40 volunteers cleaning up the site (pulling invasive plants and picking up trash) and creating and installing a sign. Most of the volunteers were from the University of Portland, and pictures can be seen here.

If you live near Greeley Forest Garden and are interested in participating in the design and installation of the food forest please feel free to contact the Site Manager, Taryn Kruger. You can contact Taryn with questions and discuss volunteering at the site here.
